The Smithville Middle School Cross Country program is a no-cut sport offered to all boys and girls at SMS. Although I cannot predict what our season will look like this Fall, I can tell you that our season is scheduled to begin with practices in August and our meets begin Sept. 14 and go through October 8th. We will typically have two meets per week. Practices are held after school until 4:30, Monday through Friday. If possible, we will plan to practice at Smiths Fork Park on Fridays prior to our meets beginning.

Cross Country meets vary in distance, but MSHSAA recommends that we move the distance to two miles. I have not learned whether that is the distance we will use this year, or if we will continue with shorter distances, ranging between 1 and 1.8 miles. We will train to be ready to run two miles. All students will participate in all meets. Sometimes the meets will have A and B groups, sometimes there is only one group. Each week I will send out an email to parents and students with information about the upcoming meets as far as times they will begin running and how the athletes will be grouped. Almost always, boys will run with boys and girls with girls. Sometimes they will separate 7th and 8th grade athletes for results and awards, other times they will keep them all grouped together.

I will update you on our summer runs. In the past there has been optional group runs on Wednesday mornings. At this time, I am not certain that these will be held, however, I will share with interested students a plan for summer running and I will update you on this as we know more about our status with Covid 19.

We have a great time during the SMS Cross Country season! The goal of our program is to begin to foster a love for running and team building. Students of all ability levels have joined cross country and have seen growth and success in meeting their goals. You do not have to be in shape to run two miles right now to sign up for Cross Country. I encourage you to let me know that you are interested, even if you are not sure, this way you will receive the information that I share out prior to the official start to our season. Please complete this form if you are interested in learning more about the 2020-2021 SMS Cross Country program! We are looking forward to another fun SMS Cross Country season!
