My name is Monica Leary, I grew up in Higginsville Missouri and graduated from Lafayette County C-1 High School. I have two children; Delani who is a freshman and Jaxson who is a fifth grader both attending Smithville Schools. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, competing in 5k runs, snowboarding, attending live music venues, finding new places to vacation and attending/watching sporting events. I am an avid fan of all activities my children participate in, the Missouri Tigers, Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, and our very own Smithville Warriors. I started my education career in 2001 at the Henry County R-I School District as a physical education teacher, volleyball, basketball and track coach. I became a Smithville Warrior in the fall of 2005 as a physical education teacher and basketball coach. I have had the great fortune of touching many students’ lives through teaching, coaching and my various leadership roles. The long-standing tradition of excellence, the communities dedication to the education system, and the family atmosphere are some of the reasons I have always wanted to remain a Smithville Warrior.
Throughout my high school career, sports and activities were a large part of my life. I recognized at a very young age the impact these venues provided for me. I knew as a Junior in high school I wanted to be a physical educator because I wanted to touch the lives of others through movement and sport. I attended The University of Central Missouri to follow this dream. I have been in education for 17 years and it has been the most rewarding experience. I feel like I have never worked a day of my life.
I have various roles at Smithville High School; I am an Assistant Principal, a Teacher, a Mentor, and a Role Model. Some of my duties include overseeing lunch detentions and Friday School, the Green Dot program, overseeing the Learning Center, working alongside our faculty and staff with our building school improvement plans, and modeling behaviors and expectations that make our building a great place. I believe all students can learn but understand each one will learn in different ways and at different rates. I believe with hard work and perseverance we can touch every student in a special way. My passion is to ensure every student knows there is a place for them inside the walls of Smithville High School as well as outside the walls of SHS as they transition to post-secondary experiences.
I am an Assistant Principal, a Teacher, a Mentor, and a Role Model and I am BUILDING STRONG!
