Hello Horizon Families!

December has definitely brought with it a chill in the air. We are keeping our fingers crossed for no more snow days, but just in case winter weather comes, you can find our Inclement Weather procedures here. Please remember to send coats, gloves, hats, etc. as students  do go outside for recess if the temperature/windchill is above 20* F.

Students are learning to code or use computer programming in our Innovation Lab. Yesterday our students PreK-6th grade participated in a global activity called the Hour of Code. Students had so much fun and were so engaged!! Mrs. Scheibe has a whole article coming out in our district newsletter. Be on the lookout and check out all of the buzz on Twitter @Hour of Code and #warriorsrise. Here are a few pictures:

Students in grades 4-6 will be receiving copies of their MAP scores along with a letter from Dr. Kratofil sometime next week. The state has changed all of the proficiency scales which may affect some student scores appearing lower than normal. These scores will provide us a baseline as we strive to grow each year.

Mid-quarter is today! The semester ends on January 18 due to the late start of the school year. We have much learning to do; however, we can't leave out a few fun activities as we gear up for the winter break. In addition to the dress up days listed on the flyer below, we do have Leadership Hour and student led assembly the afternoon of the 21st. We love highlighting our students' successes and interests during these times. We encourage all students to read, read, read over the break! Students in grades 3-5 can also practice their skills on Study Island.

Thank you so much for partnering with us to make Horizon Elementary such a wonderful place. We are blessed to serve your children and families! Happy Holidays!

For Our Kids,
Mrs. Harwood and Mr. Kuska

Library Happenings - Mrs. Sumerall
Did you know that you can access databases from home that students have been learning about during Library class? When visiting the district website, click on "Student Resources." Our students in grades 2-6 are learning about Britannica School, PebbleGo, and PebbleGo Next. Students are researching animals, people, etc, using these databases. If you are asked for a username/password, it is: ssd64089

Students in K-3 are great listeners, and have been enjoying books by a variety of authors. Many of the students have read books about bats and squirrels, Wilma Rudolph, and how people in Africa often have to walk miles just to get water. When possible, each story is connected to a nonfiction topic using one of the databases mentioned above. Students in grades 4-6 continue to learn about sources vs. search engines and how to evaluate websites.
Book Award Feature: Missouri Building Block Picture Book Award is a book award geared toward PreK-K students. The 10 books on the nominee list are read during library class. Students will vote on their favorite book in January.
PE - Mr. Barker
Just a reminder that students need to bring tennis shoes on P.E. days to participate in everything. Students have been missing out on some activities like climbing the rock wall, because they do not have the proper shoes. Thanks for your help!
