May 3, 2019
Dear Maple Families,

As we have reached the final full month of the 2018-2019 school year, we commit to ending strong by giving MORE!  How can you show MORE kindness, reach MORE goals, read MORE, or learn MORE in #MoreMay?  We are not counting the days, but we are making each day count with continued learning and celebrations!

After a motivating assembly on Monday, our 3rd and 4th grade students started MAP testing this week with the English Language Arts assessment.  They will complete the assessment with the math sessions next Monday and Tuesday, May 6-7.  Fifth and sixth grade students will test on the following days:
  • May 8-10: Math, grades 5-6
  • May 13-14: English Language Arts, grades 5-6
  • May 16-17: Science, grade 5
PTO is sponsoring an awesome Teacher Appreciation Week from May 6-10.  Join us in celebrating our teachers!
We have many upcoming events!  Grade 3-6 talent show, field day, music concerts, maker faire and district art show...I encourage you to read the newsletter carefully and save the dates!

On June 6th, Maple Elementary will have a year-end celebration.  This celebration will include our final assembly at 9:30 AM in the gym, a visit from Kona Ice, and a picnic lunch.  This celebration has been a tradition at Maple Elementary for the past few years.  Kona Ice is safe snack approved.  If the students meet their end-of-year attendance goal, a special rock concert featuring Mr. Orscheln will occur at our final assembly!!  Our last day of school is Friday, June 7th with dismissal occuring at 1 PM.

Mark your calendars now...Back-to-School night for the 2019-2020 school year will occur on Tuesday, August 13th from 4:30-6:30 PM.  The first day of school is Thursday, August 15th, 2019.  Have a great summer, and we hope to see you at summer school!

Technology and Innovation News from Mrs. Freeman
Thanks to all the First Grade families who came to celebrate with us!  It was great to be able to share our hard work with you!

I really hope everyone will plan to visit our Maker and Creator Faire on May 10 from 5-8 p.m. in the HS Auxiliary Gym.  Projects from all three elementary schools will be on display.

Students in grades K-4 have been working really hard on their coding and computational thinking skills.  These projects will continue for the next couple weeks. First and Second grade will be using our Dash Robots to either clean up trash or test out a bridge.  Third and Fourth are using our Sphero Robots to complete an obstacle course or rescue people from a burning building.

Fifth grade students are gearing up for our Tiny House Auction by putting the finishing touches on our real estate flyers.  They also have researched a country and created a tour for must see landmarks using Google 360 degree images. You can see the finished projects  here:  https://padlet.com/freemans1/t32snx2g6igq
Sixth Grade will be completing an independent project that has an Earth Day theme.  It might be coding a recycling game in Scratch or designing an attachment for a robot that can clean up trash.

Music News from Mr. Orscheln
The music room has a Marvelous May coming up!  Firstly, thank you to all 4th and 5th grade students and parents of students who attended "Joust!"  It was a mighty medieval good time!

We have a few concerts left as the year winds down.  Our spring concert for the Maple Marvels is May 15th at 7 pm at the performing arts center.  We will also have our 6th grade musical, "Press Start!" grace the stages of the Performing Arts Center as well on Thursday, May 23rd at 7 pm.

Finally, I wanted to share that I will not be returning to the Smithville School District next year.  I have accepted a position as K-5 music teacher in the Liberty School District at Lillian Schumacher Elementary School.  Please know that this decision is bittersweet, as I have loved knowing and growing with all of the students and parents the past 7 years.  However, I'm happy to share your new music teacher next year, Miss Faris is a fresh, energetic, and passionate educator who is sure to pick off seamlessly where I left off.  She is getting married over the summer and will begin the year as "Mrs. Hill".

Thank you guys so much for an amazing year!
