Release February 1, 2019

SMITHVILLE SCHOOLS RECEIVES OUTSTANDING ANNUAL PERFORMANCE REPORT

Smithville School District improved its standing to one of the highest performing districts in the Kansas City Metro according to the latest annual performance report released to the public today by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).

Overall, the District scored 99.6 percent, earning 119.5 out of the 120 possible points on the 2018 report. A district’s Average Performance Report, or APR, is the summation of scores across five standards. The standards addressed are:

1.  Academic Achievement (status plus progress or growth)

2.  Super-Subgroup Achievement (status plus progress or growth)

3.  Career and College Readiness

    • Student results on college ready assessments (ACT, SAT, ASVAB, ACT Work Keys and/or COMPASS)
    • Student results on college ready courses (Advanced Placement, Dual Credit, Career Education)
    • Student results for post-secondary placement (4-year or 2-year college, career, military)

4.  Attendance (percentage of students attending school 90% of the time)

5.  Graduation rate (best of the 4-year, 5-year, 6-year or 7-year graduation rate calculation)

This achievement was not accidental but the result of strategic work by building administrators, teachers, curriculum and instruction support staff, and students. Efforts toward improving the district’s APR included increased awareness and targeted response to student benchmark data, continued focus on foundational skills in the primary grades, teacher collaboration to understand, teach and assess updated curriculum standards, additional accommodations for students, increased differentiated instruction in ELA classrooms, and instructional shifts in mathematics all of which resulted in significant academic progress in key areas. “This achievement is the result of hardwork on the part of Pre-K-12 teachers, principals, curriculum and instruction support staff, and students. We are very proud of their accomplishments and will continue our work to ensure similar success next year,” commented Michelle Kratofil, Assistant Superintendent for Academic Services.
