AimsWeb Security Breach

The district was recently informed that one of our former assessment vendors, AIMSweb, experienced a data security breach. AIMSweb is owned by the Pearson Clinical Assessment company. The nationwide breach affected more than 13,000 school and university accounts. First and last names, email addresses, and dates of birth may have been obtained in the breach.  No grade or assessment information was affected in this incident, and the AIMSweb platform does not contain Social Security numbers, credit card data, or other financial information.

The parents of any student currently enrolled in the district whose data was compromised have received an email from the district stating such.

The Smithville School District worked with AIMSweb from the fall of 2008 to the spring of 2015. Approximately 1400 current and former students and 125 current and former staff were affected by this breach. Any elementary student, elementary teacher or administrator, or district administrator in the district during this time could have been impacted.  The student data potentially acquired includes student first and last name, and in some instances, date of birth and email address.  Since 2015, all student email addresses have been updated; none of the email addresses potentially breached are currently active. The staff data breached may include first and last name, job title, work email, and work address.

Pearson is offering complimentary credit monitoring services from Experian for affected individuals. While they do not have any evidence that the information was misused, they are providing this option for those who wish to enroll as a precautionary measure. If you are interested in learning more about this option, please call 866-883-3309 or email aimsweb1request@pearson.com.

We felt strongly that being transparent and clear about this information breach was in the best interest of our students and staff.  To inquire whether you or your child was impacted by this data breach, please contact the district office at 816-532-0406.
