Hello Warrior Strong Families and Happy Valentine’s Day! This weather is going to drive us to attend school year round with the way we are going! I would love to skip spring all together and go right into summer at this point:) I know it seems strange with all of the snow days but we are almost at the mid-term. The actual date for the mid-point grading is February 28th and the end of quarter is March 21st. We cannot push that date back due to dates set by the state and the fact that we’ve started so late. Please help your student stay on top of their academics as this quarter has been a hodgepodge of snow days. Due to snow days, attendance is even more important this semester. Students who miss school are already more likely to not do as well in the classes they miss but with snow days added they are more at risk of falling behind. We hope that students are making healthy choices and getting enough rest so they have every opportunity to be at school and have success! Let’s hope the current forecast of snow this weekend isn’t too bad!

Monday’s Matter
This is a good time to talk about Grit. Lately with the inconsistent schedule due to snow days, this is a perfect opportunity to fight through the tough times and tackle the tasks you don’t feel like doing. This video will challenge students to take on the tasks that are more challenging or difficult FIRST and to pay attention to what their self-talk is saying. Many times we avoid the tasks that are hard, scary or that challenge us. This will refocus our thinking on building GRIT!
Here are the steps to the video:

Here are the critical thinking questions.

Critical Issues
In this article it states that 3.6 million high school and middle school students are now using e-cigarettes/vapes. It saddens me that the tobacco industry is targeting our kids and it seems to be working. This article also stated that nicotine can be more addictive than cocaine, heroin or opiates and is one of the most addictive substances. Not to mention how it affects the developing brain of adolescents. Please talk to your kids about this issue and share the details. Many parents aren’t even aware of the students who are using vapes and e-cigarettes. It is NOT healthier than a regular cigarette and can even cause more harm.

Buy A Senior Tribute for the 2018-2019 Yearbook!

We know you are so proud of your teen’s accomplishments. Tell them how great they are by purchasing a Senior tribute in the Smithville High School yearbook.

Use a tribute to congratulate your graduating Senior or even acknowledge a special academic or athletic achievement during the school year. An ad in the yearbook allows you to recognize your Warrior with photos and words. While the yearbook lets your student remember all the special people and events from
the school year, the personal touch of an ad will make the book that much more special for them.

Senior tributes are available in a variety of sizes and prices. Tributes are easy to order through yearbooksforever.com

If you have any questions or would like more information, please feel free to contact the yearbook staff at yearbook@smithville.k12.mo.us
