The core values that define Smithville Upper Elementary have been identified as responsibility, safety, and respect.

Positive Behavior Intervention & Support (PBIS) is a proactive and comprehensive continuum of support designed to provide opportunities to all students, for achieving social and learning success, while preventing problem behaviors.

As Smithville Upper Elementary implements PBIS, our goal is to establish an environment that is more conducive to learning in order to improve student growth and achievement as well as school climate and culture.

Core values and expected behaviors will be positively reinforced and taught in an explicit & systematic way. Teachers & administrators will collect and analyze data related to off-task behaviors. When we understand exactly what is happening and why it is happening, our PBIS team can and will be able to develop more effective school-wide interventions.  Along with teachers, it is our plan to train paraprofessionals, substitutes, bus drivers, secretaries, cafeteria workers, and any other staff so that they are better able to manage problem behaviors and encourage good behaviors.  We will continue our practice of utilizing BIST when students make inappropriate or unsafe choices.  In every facet of our school life we will attempt to build student competency in our core values which align with our district mission and vision.
